Most viruses, spy wares, malware use certain well known patterns to enter your PC. This articles describes how to stop all the common ways in which viruses enter your PC running Windows XP.
These solutions are extremely handy, if you don't have/like to install Anti-Virus software like me :)
TURN OFF DRIVE AUTO RUNS
Most Viruses run only when the user double clicks the USB pen drives icon in My Computer. There is an easy way to stop this.
SET SOFTWARE RESTRICTION POLICIES
Downside of this method :- When you need to run an application from the USB Drive you need to copy to your system's local disk and then run it. But I have found this approach very good to prevent viruses. You can also use this method to block EXE running from other drives as well when you have all programs installed on your C: or D: Drive.
BLOCK INTERNET EXPLORER 6 - USE FIREFOX
Internet Explorer 6 is one of the browsers with a lot of security holes and vulnerability issues.
If you have not done it yet, download Firefox - the best browser in the world and try it today. Its got millions of cool add ons that will make you love it.
NEVER DOWNLOAD TOOL BARS
Never download any tool bar from any site. Even if they claim it to be 100% spam free except from Stumble Upon :P , (Google, Yahoo etc. optional). Even if its very very essential please Google it once before installing.
UPDATE YOUR BROWSER REGULARLY
Most Viruses from internet use the vulnerability in your Browser to download themselves. So please keep your browser updated everyday with latest patches.
